Albuquerque Film & Music Experience (AFMX) to Bypass its Annual Festival in 2026
Albuquerque, NM – February 17, 2026 – After careful review, AFME Foundation and AFMX have made the intentional decision to pause its annual festival in 2026 to strengthen the foundation for its long-term future. The annual film festival will return in 2027 bigger and better than ever.
“The organization will use 2026 as a strategic rebuild year, focusing on educational programming, community outreach, and curated panels and master classes that directly serve filmmakers, students, and creatives across New Mexico,” said Jonathan Nagel, AFME Foundation Board Member. AFMX will also offer several fundraising events with industry leaders throughout 2026 as part of its year-round programs.
“This approach allows AFMX to operate responsibly, deepen its impact, and secure the right partnerships and venue infrastructure to return with a stronger, more sustainable festival in 2027,” said Larry Schwartz, President of AFME Foundation Board of Directors.
“We’re excited about what we’re building in 2026 and confident this evolution positions AFMX for long-term success,” said Nagel.
The AFME Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is the driving force behind the Albuquerque Film + Music Experience (AFMX). Our mission is to ignite a powerful fusion of film, music, and education. By bringing together groundbreaking cinema, live performances, and professional development, we create an unforgettable cultural experience that sparks lifelong connections and inspires future generations.
We aim to enrich Albuquerque’s cultural landscape and strengthen the local economy by positioning our city as a global epicenter for the arts. Beyond the screen and stage, we are dedicated to the next generation, providing middle, high school, and college students—as well as emerging artists—with the tools and networking opportunities to launch transformative careers right here in New Mexico.

"I was really pleased to see the reaction that [AFME] got because of what they are building here and what they represent in terms of the arts. To see the enthusiasm from the audience, it really lifted me and is why Robert Lynch and I are here tonight." - Robert Redford, Founder of Sundance Film Festival
